The ‘concept’ of a composite - shopping centre with off-street parking, now ‘so commonplace, was new at that time. Thus, when Park Royal. Shopping Centre started business on September 1, ; 1950, it was the first regional shopping : centre in Canada. °" It wasn't until August 2, 1978 — ‘28 years later’~ that the Bay joined its competitors - David Bogle ’ Mark Kuhn -Pau! Hudson on the North Shore. An extensive media campaign, with We're On Your Side! as the message. launched our new store on the ‘South side of Park Royal. Actors, dressed as Voyageurs, sailed down the “ Capilano River in a birch bark canoe and docked at the Bay, staking claim with the “HBC flag. It was a spectacular opening! Bay Associates still recall the good old days. The store manager's whose first task evary morning was to ensure fixtures were perfectly lined up! The two succes- sive years that men's wear won the Bay Day Challenge and bought a microwave - and TV set.for the siaff lounge.
