Council votes

A NORTH Vancouver District
councillor has threatened a sit-
down strike if a memorial
plaque on a horse trough is not
amended to include the names
of all district councillors.

of a motion by Coun. Ernie Crist to
change the wording on the Lynn

will you stay there,” responded
Coun. Don Bell.

With tongue firmly in cheek.
Bell also noted, “I'm not overly
concerned about having my name
on a public trough.”

Added Coun Pat Munroe: “I'm
not sure whether the mayor or the
council ‘should be on the plaque
depending, which end of the horse
is being represented.”

A recently unveiled plaque at the
corner of Lynn Valley Rd. and
Draycott Rd. currently states:

1912 The Lynn Valley Horse
Watering Trough.

This trough provided drinking
water for local horses including
those of the Lynn Valley Volunteer
Fire Department.

Harris said the text of the plaque
should have been vetted by council
as a matter of courtesy.

But the additional cost of $2,200
for a replacement bronze: plaque
was too rich for the majority of
council, even though Harris sug-
gested the source of funds as “out of
Mayor Dykeman’s pocket.”

Asked to justify the replacement
cost he had suggested, director of
engineering John Bremner replied:
“That was what we in engineering
call a WAG — a wild-assed guess.”

Bell later asked if enginecring
would in future identify which of

With Bykeman absent from
Wednesday’s council mecting. it
was left to Bell to defend the mayor.

“The mayor didn't make this
decision and likely wasn’t aware of
it until he unveiled it.” said Bell.

“| think there is a value to having
the names of mayor and council} on
plaques associated with public
works because it helps remind the
public that their elected council is
involved in the happenings of the
district.”

Council voted 4-2 against replac-
ing the plaque but agreed 5-1 with
Munroe’s motion that future
plaques will include all councillors’
names unless otherwise approved
by council.
