editor dies
LOUISE SPRATLEY, former
newspaper editor and West Van-
couver journalist, died on Mon-
day, April 26, at Lions Gate Hos-
pital.

Mrs, Spratley was editor of the
Lions Gate Times, West Van-
couver’s ‘community newspaper
from 1985 to $967, She won
MacMillan Bloedel journalism
awards in 1965 and 1966 for two
series of articles published in the
Lions Gate Times.

In 1966 the Lions Gate Times
was named best newspaper by the

Canadian Community Newspaper
Association.

Briefly after 1967, Mrs. Spratley.

was editor of the. BC Hotelman’s
magazine. She then served until
1974 as “West.*Coust executive
assistant for MP Jack Davis.

During the time that Davis was
fisheries minister,. Mrs. Spratley
worked with him to establish the
Capilano River salmon hatchery. °

Mrs, Spratley was a key con-
tributor to the 1980 West Van-
couver Community Plan. :

Mrs. Spratley’s devotion to
West Vancouver, and her intense
interest in presenting seemingly
dry and complex community
issues in dramatic and easily
understood ways, led her to work
as the editor of the Wesr Van-
couver Municipal News (later call-
ed West Vancouver Report).

Her family will receive friends
and co-workers on Saturday, May
15, from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m, at, 1115
Haywood Ave. in West .Van-
couver. '
