ONE OF the facts of driving on
the North Shore is that every Oc-
tober or so, the weather offers up
a good dose of early morning mist
and fog.

According to automotive
specialists, there are several steps
you can take for safe driving in
these kind of weather conditions.

Fog can hit anytime of the year,
but it is generally associated with
high humidity or heavy frost. It
can be light enough to see through
for several hundred metres or it
can be so thick that you can bare-
ly see beyond the end of your car
hood.

As soon as you drive into a fog
patch, your visibility will be
quickly reduced. The biggest
dangers are running into a slower
moving vehicle ahead or being
struck by a faster one from

behind.

As you drive into fog, try to
“‘read’’ the fog density down the
toad. if the vehicle in front starts
to become fess clear — or, at
night, tail-lights become harder to
see — the fog is probably thicken-
ing. Slow down gradually to allow
traffic behind you a chance to
slow down accordingly.

Whenever you’re driving in fog,
be it light fog or haze, turn your
headlights on fow-beam -— even
in daylight. You'll see and be seen
much better. Use your fog lamps
if your vehicle is so equipped.

Do not, however, use your
high-beams. The light will bounce
off the water droplets that make
up the fog and reflect back in
your eyes, making visibility worse.

To further aid visibility, use
your defroster and rear defogger.
