I BRING you good tidings. These news wilt shore up your self-esteem, refresh your optimism and restore your hopes for an in- teresting and dignified old age. The message is that we are not coming unstuck. Our problems with memory are, rather, the pro- duct of overload, of trying to cram the daily minutiae in on top of our already overflowing memo- ry bank. The great thing is that we can take actual steps to rid ourselves of nuisance and embar- _ Fassment. Think about what we've already got stored in our heads. Add the fact that each bit has countless associations amongst the other bits, and think how trying just to link your own personal mass of clues puts remarkable pressure on your thinker. Imagine what a scurry goes on in there when you ask it to retrieve a name, or a game, or an old flame! It's a wonder, really, but given an adjective or a destination or whatever you are trying to recall, the mind doesn’t give up. That’s why you ‘come to’’ hours later saying “That’s what it was!’" The brain cells once given a task don’t rest till the answer’s achieved! AH these interesting explana- tions came to me from a little book called ‘Dealing With Mem- ory Changes As You Grow Older.”” It’s crammed with infor- mation and strategies and sup- ports, and it’s free. Sunday, June 14, 1992 ~ North Shore“News — Ba] scurry to find a name, game or old flame this wonderful lifetime inventory you carry in your memory is THE VINTAGE YEARS unique to you, that it is in fac¢ who you are, and you’ve been adding to it every minute of your ife. You’ve also mulled it and recalled it countless times, so don’t reproach yourself when you fail to register the name of the Person next to you at this morn- ing’s meeting, or where you left the car at iunch-time. It’s new stuff — you haven’t tad it in there long enough for it to find a place to sit. And more significantly, you don’t really want it taking up permanent resi- dence. To complicate things further, there are two distinct types of tememberers — the eye-minded and the ear-minded. Find out and rely on your own styie. And here’s further conifort for you — much forgetting is natural and neces- sary. In the face of that estab- lished quadriilion it’s clear why. But we do hold rich deposits that support us wonderfully in at- tempting to learn new things. That’s one of our great advan- tages, and in my view the one that can give us the best of all rewards. Learning new things lifts us up out of the old-age stereotype of mental inertia, and we can dig up gold from our memory-werks by accepting that challenge. Forget the competition. We all retain differently, at different speeds and in different ways, and admitting that one thing at a time is our best -pyeed will greatly facilitate the achieve..ent we're focusing on. How can you better your per- formance at storing and recalling? There are several really basic ways, all clearly and thoroughly outlined in the little book. There are, first, a number of short questionnaires designed to establish your degree of memory dysfunction, as well as a good deal of straightforward talk about general aging as opposed to that of the sufferers trom dementia and senility. There’s also a heartening list of steps we can take. Energy level affects your memory, you learn; nutrition plays a big part in help- ing you retain and recall; your daily consumption of water is a factor, as is your intake of prescription or other drugs. The degree of stress in your dai- ly life is also to be reckoned with, and memory will function much better when you relax. As well, lean on lists. Lists for the groceries, lists for telephone calls, list of books to be read, lists of appointments. And articulate incidental things that otherwise escape so easily — “I am putting my car-keys in my jeans pocket.”’ Say it aloud and nail it down. You’re not too old to learn to remember, you're jacking self- confidence and motivation, that’s all, Do give this little book a chance. There’s much mere to it than I have given you here, and the whole tone and intent of the authors is to encourage. Their practical philosophy lies in their summing-up: ‘Memory connects us to our present, and gives significance to our fuiure. It is central to the core of wisdom.”” CAPILANO SUSPENSION BRIDGE AND % JOHN PRISLAND, STROLLING MUSICIAN old fashioned songs and instruments noon - 4pm * THE CARNIVAL OF THE ANIMALS maricnette show at 1:45pm * BARBECUE COOKOUT in addition co our regular menu... hot chile and corn on the cob! 11:30am - 6:00pm # 10 cent ICE CREAM CONES! * HISTORY TOURS, SCOTTISH BAGPIPER * 2 FOR 1 ANNUAL PASS SALE FREE ADMISSION TO SENIORS AND CHILDREN UNDER 12!
