Local Midget B squad takes Colorado tourney THE NORTH Vancouver Midget B hockey team overcame the high altitude of. Colerado Springs, Col- -orado, and four American- baséd teams to become the champions of the High School Division, at the 15th annual President’s Day hockey tournament held Feb. 13 to 17. This year’s tournament . was dedicated to Bob Johnson who passed away last. November. Coach Johnson devoted much of his time and talent to the preser- . vation. and promotion of youth hockey. ; Sixty teams from alt over the U.S. aad Canada competed in 150 hockey games. The competition was at all levels including Novice, Atoms, Pee Wee, Bantam, Midget and High School. . Albuquerque, New Mexico, and Colorado Springs, the host teams, both fell to the powerful North Van Blues by identical scores of 10-0. A strong performance by Tyler Owen in goal resulted in two of three shutouts recorded by the team. The defence, Sam Zoobkoff, Ben Goh, Ben Fuller, Rene Pahlke, Geofff McDonald and. Duke Sall, were very stingy by allowing only 43 shots on goal for the entire tournament. In the Colorado game, Jason Maihara collected three goals to eam a hat trick award and Michael Potyka was selected as play maker of the game for his five assists. With two wins under their belt, the North Van team had their hands full with an inspired team from Casper, Wyoming. The Casper team game plan was to be physical to try and throw the North Van team off stride. ‘with first Down two goals to none going into the third period, North Van fought back on a goal by Tyler Marsh early in the period. With only one minute and 12 seconds remaining in the game and the goal keeper pulled for an extra at- tacker, Andrew Durnin tied the game at two and the team held on for a well-deserved tie. The final game of the round robin was against Omaha, Nebraska, who had the same re- cord as the North Van team: two wins and one tie. This game would decide first place overall and assure the win- ner of a place in the final cham- pionship game. The team from Omaha ended up in second position, thus setting up a rematch’ of the previous game. Led by four goals and one assist for Brock Barabash and three assists by Durnin, the Blues skated to a 6-1 victory and the championship of the high school division. A solid effort was shown by all including Scett Souter, Kris Lew, Todd Stojcic and Donny Coghill. Meanwhile Hollyburn Pee Wees (i2 and 13 year olds) and Atoms (10 and 11 year olds) came home and second place trophies from the Pike’s Peak President’s Day Hockey Tourna- ment in Colorado. The Pee Wees, coached by Dan Brennan and Tim Winter, swept their series five games in a row, including a 3-0 win in the playoffs against Albuquerque, New Mex- ico. The Atoms, coached by John Wilson, Ken Kehler and Tor , Olsen, won three, tied one, and in -the heart-stopping moments of overtime, lost to Kansas City 4-3. The momentum by both teams should carry over into the two teams’ home division playoffs. FIRST PLACE Pee Wee Rep Hockey team at the recent Pikes Peak Amateur Hockey tournament was won by Hollyburn Pee Wees in Colorado Springs, Colorado.
