Columnist nominated for
national literary award

Bob Hunter is among this year’s
Governor General! Literary Award
nominees..

Hunter is up against four Ca-
nadian writers including literary
giant Northrop Frye in the English
non-fiction category for his latest
book, Occupied Canada: A Young
White Man Discovers His Un-
suspected Past (McClelland &
Stewart).

The book, published three
months ago, was co-written by
Vancouver weiter Bob Calihoo.
The story is based on Calihoo’s
discovery of his Iroquois
ancestory.

**He’s (Calihoo) a person who
had no identity. He wasn’t seen as
indian or Canadian,” said Hunter
from his Toronto office.

The author of 10 books, Hunter
describes Occupied Canada as ‘‘a
revised history of Canada from a
native perspective.

“It's a piece of Canadian histo-
ry that really hasn't been brought
up until now.””

This is the second time Hunter
has been nominated for the Gov-
ernor General’s Award, worth
$10,000.

This year's list includes about
70 nominees including two big-
name writers: two-time winner
Margaret Atwood, nominated in
the English fiction category for
her collection of short stories,
Wilderness Tips, and Frye for his
biblical study Words With Power.

While Hunter said he’s
delighted to receive the nomina-
tion, ‘the trouble is, I’m up
against Northrop Frye.””
