38 - Sunday. September 9, 1990 - North Shore News IF YOU want to have a lot of fun while you’re losing your money in Reno, try playing some new games. I'm semi-addicted to Red Dog. Ever played Acey-Deucey? Also called In-Between? Red Dog is the same game, with odds-on for short spreads. The dealer deals to herself, on- ly. She uses a small dog to place the odds on the next card falling between the two she's dealt. The player can raise his bet at any time, except when the dealer pairs — if the next card makes three of a kind, the players are paid 11- one. I couldn’t believe the number of people who scanned the table but were afraid to join the game. It’s so simple to play and the action is fast. A good Red Dog table is a jot of fun — players get into the action by chanting, ‘‘Think six!” or whatever number is necessary. Red Dog is played with an eight-deck shoe. It takes a long time to shuffle so the table takes a break and chats. You can win a lot on Red Dog but you can also lose con- siderably, I did both. Still, 1 enjoy it. Brian thinks it’s awful. He likes Pai Gow Poker — dull city, to me. There are two types of Pai Gow — one, poker, is played with cards. The other is played with black tiles and is a mystery to me. The visitors to Reno in recent times have been vast numbers of Asians which explains the popu- larity of Pai Gow. Pai Gow Poker is a slow game. The players and the dealer are dealt seven cards. Of these, all must make two poker hands — two cards and five cards. Your small hand must beat the dealer’s small but must not beat your big hand. To win, the dealer must beat both of yours. There are a lot of ‘*pushes’? — ties — so you can play a long time on a $5 (mini- mum) bet. You can quit yawning any time. kkk } promised a little Reno gossip. Older visitors will remember two clubs — the Riverside and the Mapes — that went under. They sit, empty shells, near the Truckee River Bridge on Virginia Street. Included now is the Onslow, just a bit north. TRAVEL Red Dog game is doggone fun Reno players get into the action at games table Barbara McCreadie TRAVELWISE As to the original closures ~ the gossip is that the management (owners) took a bit too much out by way of profits. When the clubs were hit by too many big winners (Keno was mentioned) they couldn't bankroll the losses. The Mapes, especially, is a heritage building. Can’t tear it down and can’t use it. Why? Asbestos. I heard that all three above mentioned buildings — Riverside, Mapes and Onslow are insulated with the stuff. It’s hard to remove. Next bit of gossip — there’s a company that specializes in sealing the asbestos so that it isn’t a health hazard but remains in the wails as insulation. They’re on call. Next bit of gossip — all three buildings are possible time-share properties. If they do fall on the market as time-shares, | hope North Shore readers have the sense to steer clear. A time-share in Reno would be financial! suicide. The sensible player goes for a couple of days and gets to hell out before the system leaves him broke. There is only one winner — besides the State of Nevada — and that’s the casino. Are they hungry for Canadian dollars! The best odds 1 found — Cal-Neva club — $18.50 for CDN $20. Other clubs are giving $18. Last time we were down, the only two clubs I found giving prefer- ence to CDN were Cal-Neva and Eldorado. Times change. Now, every club is advertising, ‘‘Wel- come CDN.”* Reno has always been one of 50% off 2nd Passenger MEXICO on the Viking Serenade, Oct. 13, 20, 27, Nov. 3, 10, 17, 24, Dec. 1, 8 includes air- fare from Vancouver. 7 days from just $831.25. The guests were ruder. | have a slight hearing im- pairment — in a quiet room, | can hear just fine, but in a noisy situ- ation the background clatter makes it tough. Add to that a fot of dealers who spoke English tudimentaily and with a heavy ac- cert. Help! The south-centre part of Virginia Street is nearly dead. Please note the Mapes, Riverside and Onslow are all down there. Harrah's Club nas taken over the old bank on their corner of Virginia Street and kept the outer decor, just. They added ugly awn- ings. Inside is a mess. No one seems to do any housekeeping — it’s mostly a slot-stop and paper wrappers littered the floor. ‘‘Let's get out of here!’* was Brian's only comment. We spent one afternoon shop- ping. The Reno antique shops are still great — look for the Antique Mall on Mills and also the Mills Street Blues adjacent. Wells Street has shops all over the place — | ———s @ Holland AmericaCruises a ar Treen | take a car. Another big disappointment — and one of the reasons we drove down — was the warehouse outlet on South Virginia for restaurant equipment. I've got a steam tray from there and wanted to buy another. Forget it. The stuff is mostly junk and overpriced. I can buy much better here. We had dinner at Louie's Bas- que Corner (4th and Evans). Brian tolerated it. I enjoyed it, but more for the communal tables than the menu. I don't forsee a return trip to Reno for a long time. Pity. R.V.
