But that’s where the similarities end. While someone who purchases a boat can sai! away without ac- quiring a licence to operate the vessel, it would, of course, be il- legal to drive a car without a licence. But the Canadian Power and Sail Squadrons (CPS), a national organization whose aim is to teach the basics of boating, thinks any- one who is going to opcrate a vessel should first receive some training in that area, even though it is not mandatory. West Vancouver resident Susan Cooper, district lieutenant and public relations officer for the Pacific Mainland District division of the CPS, said it would be ta the advantage of boaters to take boating courses, both for safety reasons and because boaters can acquire certificates that can fead to reduced insurance rates. Cooper says the basic unit of CPS is the squadron, and there are 170 squadrons across Canada which range in size from 15 By Surj Rattan News Reporter members to over 800. Two members of CPS were recently awarded the Lemon Hart Award by the CPS for their brav- ery in a boating rescue operation. Last February the Rescue Coordination Centre in Victoria was advised that two technicians from a local radio station had gone to Chatham Island in Oak Bay to service a transmitter and had become stranded on the island due to weather conditions. It was -Il C. High winds and snow showers had reduced visibili- ty to near zero, A rescue boat was sent out, but because of a navigational error, it struck a rock and was badly dam- aged. The three-man crew issued a distress call and abandoned ihe vessel, wading across a narrow gap to a higher rock where they tried to find shelter from = the storm. A Coast Guard zodiac, manned by a volunteer crew, which in- cluded Denis Nyren and Alek Bill, were dispatched to the scene. Cooper said the pair did a “*remarkable job” in rescuing the three stranded men. “Those conditions were dread- ful,” said Cooper. ‘*The sea would want to pound inat in- flatable. They were lucky they got away with it."* The Capilano, Burrard and Seymour squadrons will all hold boating courses this fall. The Capilano Squadron will hold a boating course on Sept. I] at West Vancouver Secondary School and a VHF course at the school on Sept. 13. “The boating course is your basic course about boating,"’ said Cooper. ‘It’s a very intensive lit- tle course, and you should have the knowledge if you’re going to operate a vessel.” ‘*To operate a boat there is no mandatory licensing, but with this course you will understand the rules.” Anyone wishing to enrol in the courses should contact Cooper at 926-1059, “New Kid's on the Block” | Tickets for you! 57 2,4 | ee FROM EN-L RATION?
