THE CARIBOO town of Barker- ville is the setting. The Gold Rush is the period. A tale of the Gold Rush's sud- den life and quick demise, the new play at North Vancouver's Pres- entation House is farkerville, a play by poet Florence McNeil. A world premiere, Barkerville presents the characters and events at the centre of the Cariboo Gold Rush in the out-of-nowhere boom town of the same name. Barkerville, performed by stu- dents from Presentation House’s resident Film and Theatre Com- pany, runs Nov. I} to Dec. 5, and is the last main play this year. “I think I’ve been interested in Barkerville since I went up there in the early 60s,"* explained McNeil. “t's really been a fascinating era for me.” The play, in which the fortunes of the town’s people wax and wane, ‘‘is really in a sense a story of the town"’ and features mostly historical characters. Running Tuesday to Saturday, the play offers a matinee perfor- mance Wednesditys. In the Anne Macdonald Hall, the final play in the Canadian mini-series is David French’s Of the Fields Lately, the final work in his family trilogy. Following Leaving Mome and Saltwater Moon, Of the Fields Lately is a look at the host of ex- pectations, hopes, hardships and delights of a Canadian family. Running Nov. 18 to Dec. 12, the play runs Tuesday to Saturday, with a preview two-for-one show Nov. 17.
