The treatuse, dear readers, is about a cruise ship which cost $110 million and didn’t earn a dime for two years while growing up. Now it is able to boast a 102 per cent occupancy and is taking the North American’ vacation market by storm. “The Tropicale” is no ordinary cruise ship. Its owners, Carnival Cruise status as the most successful cruise line anywhere by re- furbishing three other passenger ships for the cruise market, all but their money resources to produce this beauty that cruise critics call “absolutely magnificent.” This city, fresh from a successful shakedown summer sailing out of Vancouver to Alaska, is performing in seven-day steps out of Los Angeles through the warm waters of the Mexican Riviera. Cruise patrons, realizing a holiday at sea is the most eco- nomical of all holidays, are passing the word around. “The Tropicale’s” oc- cupancy average continues above the 100 per cent Category. Wouldn't we think a ship of this stature, designed to accommodate more than 1,200 guests in 611 spacious cabins, would leave the lay- man with a definite feeling of | plowing through sunny seas, losing its many guests in the caverns of a 10-storey ship? Thomas, who came off a week's cruise on “The Tropicale” in December, was quick to elaborate on the ship’s design and ap- pointments that leave the traveller with a feeling of spaciousness yel coziness, whether it be in the tastefully appointed cabins and suites or the restful but beautifully decorated Palm Restaurant, accommodating 658 diners at each sitting in an environ- ment of virtual intimacy and serenity seldom found in and seclusion, rather than of great space and mealtime regimentation. Thomas said ‘The Tropicale” boasts the largest casino afloat, where the atmosphere and tempo 1s easy and where the dealers, trim in their tuxedos, give daily lectures on the correct procedures how to become a tables. Two great clubs, the 582-- person “Tropicana” lounge, where two professional stage shows are offered nightly, serve the 10 decks. Thomas, pleased to see 22 happy handicapped travel- lers moving effortlessly by wheelchairs on the 10 decks and companionways which are sloped rather than staired, reminded us all con- veniences for the handi- capped are provided in 11 large suites.
