. Jenny Barker came as a
“bride from .Grays; Essex,
- England to West Vancouver
inthe springof 1911.

_ She and her husband
:-: George lived in a tent at the
bottom of 22nd strest, right.
‘On ‘the waterfront. Jenny

- her honeymoon and never
‘left - except for a brief time
during the following winter
for the birth ‘of her first
_ child.

Everything was bush in
West Vancouver in those
days. There were several

_ people camping in tents.
‘Jenny thought ‘it was a.
-- wonderful life. She had

' Mever experienced anything
like it before.

Gradually houses began to
appear.. John Lawson had a
house at 17th. It was the only
place that was cleared. They
: used to hold the Sunday
- School picnics there in the
* small orchard.

The ferry docked at 17th
street in those days, and wild
blackberries were growing
everywhere. It was nothing

‘ to pick a five pound lard pail
in a couple of hours.

After the birth of their
first child they turned the
tent into a small cottage.
Jenny had three more
children but sadly her
husband became ill and had

cooked a turkey because
there. was no refrigeration. It
was always a chicken that
could be eaten in one meal.
They used to. make all their
own and hang them
from the board walls of the
cottage at Christmas. There
was always a Christmas tree

with homemade
decorations.
The years go by and Jenn

now lives in the Ki i
Lodge. Her three living
children visit her frequently,
and she still enjoys her
books cach week from the
West Vancouver Library
