Pa WHILE THE SOUNDS of Christmas carols and tearing wrapping paper will be heard in most homes over the holidays,-in some on the North Shore it will be the sound of skates sharpéning and hockey sticks slapping against pucks as the youngsters practise for an holiday season of hockey action. Several special events are taking place in minor hockey, including two tournaments (one in North Van and ‘the other in Bur- naby), exhibition games with European teams, and a trip to Europe for one lucky group of stick-handlers. the eighth annual Christmas Bantam Tour- oa nament brings together 30 teams from Columbia, the United States and abroad, It takes: place from December 27 to 31 at the North Vancouver Recreation Centre and the Karen Magnussen Arena. The tournament involves A. B, and C lévels. Sixty games will be held-during the - British) first four days of the tour- nament, with the finals in each level on New Year's Eve at the Rec Centre. The C final begins at 9 a.m. on the 31st, with the B final at 11:30 a.m. and the A final at 2 p.m. There will. be two exhibition games, the first featuring the North Van- couver A team against a >» uad from Sweden, and the other between the North Vancouver Dynamos womens team and a Finnish team (see below). ‘ The Swedish team will be playing on December 29 at 4:45 p.m. at Karen payer ene S Magnussen, and the Finnish squad on December 30 at 7 p.m. at the Rec Centre. Teams from Portland, Seattle, Mission, Abbotsford and Vancouver Island will be joining squads from the Lower Mainland in the Christmas tournament. North Shore entrants are North Shore Winter Club B, North Vancouver A, B and C, and Hollyburn A. The North Vancouver Dynamos, the womens team that will be facing the Finns on December 30, . could easily be called the ‘Ed- monton Oilers of womens’ ice hockey.
