began, the sun pecked
briefly from behind the grey
lid of the sky. From then on,
it appeared like a very slow-
motion strobe light, with the
murky interludes between

There was talk of
“dumping the wind into the
main”
and we even set
ourselves up “wing-on-
wing”, but for the first part

of the race we averaged
about two knots.

Coming back = across
English Bay, we zoomed to
four knots, five knots! There
were a lot of boats ahead of
us, but also a lot behind. In a
philosophical mood,
helmsman Hennecker ex-
plained that the main reason
for racing is “to beat the
other guy.”

At 1209, we ran aground.
off Spanish Banks. As it
turned out, we were on the _
flood. ‘Within minutes, : the
boat drifted free. There was
