A8-Wednesday, September 10, 1980 - North Shore News Independents condemn LGH abort! FROM PAGE A1 would stop all abortions and those who support abortion on demand. _ However, they maintain: “A more moderate position has been advanced by the five independent hospital directors elected last year by the Hospital Society. “These directors have worked conscientiously both in a constructive, supportive manner as well as initiating new programs in an effort to make a good health care delivery system even better.” FUTILE The candidates answer accusations that the abortion issue dominates board meetings by stating: “The fact is that less than eight hours have been spent in the last year discussing this basic issue in a futile attempt to bring the hospital practice into conformity with both the letter and the spirit of the law.” These “independent” candidates say they share the concern expressed by B.C. Health Minister Rafe Mair over the fact that abortions in B.C. — 33 for every 100 live births — exceed the ratio of all other provinces and more particularly that at Lions Gate the figure is 55 abortions per 100 live births. And though they say they are not trying to abolish the abortion committee, the candidates adamantly op- pose the fact that the committee approves over 99 per cent of all abortion applications it receives. Answering the pro-choice viewpoint on abortion, they say: “The applicant does not have the right of choice under the Criminal Code of Canada.” They say they support the stand of existing board HARVEY DEIBERT members who were also endorsed by Pro-Life, that “the letter of the law provides that an abortion may be authorized only when the therapeutic abortion committee is of the opinion that the con- tinuation of the pregnancy would or would be likely to endanger the health of the applicant.” OBJECTIONS In their press release, the four list three specific ob- jections in their opposition to the current = abortion policy at LGH. 1. “Abortions currently granted on grounds of convenience in defiance of the directives of the B.C. Minister of Health, the B.C. Attorney General and the Criminal Code of Canada.” 2. “Abortions currently performed on minors without parental knowledge or consent.” 3. “Abortions performed when the unborn child is over 20 weeks and therefore potentially capable of in- dependent life.” They add: “We oppose the concept that a woman has the right an abortion on demand. She does not have the legal right to commit suicide or murder and she Concern voiced about pinball The “indiscriminate — in- crease” in the number of pinball machines in North Vancouver City has come to the a.iecntion of one City alderman.
