men in such sports as tennis,
auto racing and, basketball
have been receiving
headlines. in recent years,
but a quiet revolution has
been occurring in women’s
increasing involvement in
the outdoors.

A recent A.C. Nielsen
survey indicated: thzt 21
million women in the U.S.
fish, up from only 9 million
at the start of the 1970s. The
same report revealed that 20
per cent of the nation’s
scuba divers were women,
compared to only 5 per cent

makes the final decision on
what type of unit to buy and

clothing, the influence of
women has been even more
marked. For years, women
who wished to participate in
outdoor sports had to be
content with buying the
small sizes of men's gear. But
not any more. The women
raised such a clamor that
today most fine outdoor
stores display separate

_ apparel designed for women.

In fact, an outdoor clothing
manufacturer today is
risking the loss of a huge
share of the market if he

doesn’t produce clothing
made for women.

women in the decisions to
buy outdoor recreation
products came through loud
and clear at a recent meeting
