The $9 million is part of a $50 million five-year agreement signed by the federal and - provincial governments to provide a boost to the development of the travel industry in the less urbanized areas of the province, as well as help the national travel account balance of payments. Whistler is the first recipient of assistance under the agreement, and the grant will be used to help the Town Centre of Whistler and surrounding area to become a viable, world-class multi- season resort community. The new Whistler Village will be the central core of a two mountain ski complex involving the present Whistler Mountain and the soon. to be developed Blackcomb Mountain, making the Whistler area one of the largest ski facilities in North America with an, unparalleled choice of ski terrain. “7 the new. ¥ , gees oe age i Ee: The new Village Centre will be located at the foot of the Whistler north side slopes, (the base of the existing Olympic run), and the soon to be completed Blackcomb Mountain lifts. The plan is based on a pedestrian mall that links the com- munity and local shopping facilities with the recreation activity .of Whistler and Blackcomb Mountains.
