Here is my probiem. | have a
i991 Toyota Corolla GTS
(160,000 km) which T have reg-
ularly serviced by the dealership.

Two days after getting it
back from the dealer for the
96,000-kim service, a sew bat-
tery and new spark plugs, the
“check engine” light came on.

The computer indicated it
was the oxygen sensor which the
dealer said [ needed to replace.
The dealer reset the computer
twice and the second time the
light stayed off for 3-4 days and
then came back on again. What
is the oxygen sensor and what
does it do?

One of the problems I men-
tioned to the dealer at the
96,000-km service was a hesita-
tion problem my car is having
when it is cald, but they didn’t
know what was causing that
probiem. is the oxygen sensor
related toa tune-up or dirty fuel
injector issue rather than an
expensive oxygen sensor repiace-
ment. What is your advice?

Once the light has been on, a
“code” is stored as a one or
two-digit aumber. The code
then can be retrieved by a tech-
nican The number relates te
the circuit thar has fuled, and
has to be diagnosed further.

In your case, P suspect there

a code related to the oxy
mnsor or circuit.

The oxyeen-sensor is
meannted in the exhaust-stream,
and is used by the computer to
moniter and “adjust” the
air/fuel-mixture ratio when the
engine is warm.

If there is a mixture ratio
problem, the computer “sees”
this by monirering the oxygen

sensor and ules to correct it, EF

the oxygen-sensor still indicates
a problem, and the computer is
unable io correct the air/fuel-
mixture any further, the “check
engine” light will come on.

A defective sensor or circuit
can therefore give the wrong,
information to the computer
and gas-mileage and emissions
svill suffer tremendously.

A fiiel-supply problem, like a
restricted fuel-filter or injectors
can also set codes related to die
oxygen-sensor: in thai case the
problem is not the sensor itself.

This can cause vour cold dri-
ving hesitation problem, a too
lean running engine wil ran
worse when the engine is cold.
