Lions Bay Mayor Brenda Broughton said a June 29 meeting of Hawe Sound stakchoiders was “historic.” About 25 politicians and 12 observers were invited to the Forum on Coordinated Planning for Howe Sound at Furry Creek. The event marked the first time that clected officials from areas throughout Howe Sound gathered to discuss a vision tor Howe Sound and overlapping concerns in the area. Participants included Bowen Island Mayor Lisa Barrett, West Vancouver District Coun. Baker in the carly evening of July 3 when the 63-year-old father tumbled three metres and sustained a closed head injury. The man’s 39-year-old son, a neurosurgeon, pitched a tent and used a cellphone to call for help. Washington County sher- -iffs and Bellingham Search and Rescue attempted an air rescuc with the assistance of a U.S. Navy chopper from ‘Whidbey Island but were unable to extract the pair ‘from. the glacier due to haz- ardous weather conditions. After a call from their southern counterparts, North Shore Rescue — along with Lions Bay and Chilliwack Search and Rescue teams — responded to the call after midnight on July 4. ‘s~ North Shore Rescue sent a three-man‘ team aboard a Talon helicopter and, after flying a reconnaissance pass, evacuated the two men. It was time to be proactive and develop a planning process for Howe Sound,” said Broughton, who chaired the mecting. Broughton said that elected officials talked about maintain - ing the spirit and “magic” of Howe Sound, economic viability and environmental issues. They did not delve into specific issues. Broughton said the next step was to apply to the provincial government fora planning grant. “Phe grant will pay staff te pro- duce a Howe Sound plan. “Howe Sound has no plan and when there is no plan, anarchy exists. Anarchy is a strong word and [ mean it as 3 functional outcome,” said Broughton. She used the Britannia mine and the liquid natural gas proposals for the area as examples of controversial issues chat could have been addressed proactively rather than reactively by Howe Sound stakeholders. She pointed out that there are three regional districts in the Howe Sound area. “Ht leaves Howe Sound in the middle with- out a coordinated jurisdiction,” she said. The idea was set aside, however. An observer from the Ministry of Municipal Atairs was pre- sent at the meeting. Broughton said the area is marketed as a major Vancouver- area tourist attraction. It should have relative limits to growth and be protected. Suprovich said people at the meeting expressed passion for the region. He identified transportation as one of the key issues for any Howe Sound planning efforr.
