The blaze, at 5460 Manne Drive, started just before 7:30 a.m. Firefighters arrived within three minutes, but found the property atready engulfed in flames, said West Vancouver Fire and Rescue Captain Martin Ernst. They opted to fight the tire defensively, concentrating on preventing any spread to neighbouring houses ur trees. The homeowner was alert- ed to the fire by one of his two sons, who were at the house along with nwo teenage house guests. All were between the ages of 14 and 17. The fire began in the southwest lower corner of the house, at the entrance to what the homeowner referred to as the “sewing and activity room.” By the time the homeown- er returned with a fire extin- guisher, the flames had quadrupled in size, and the occupants were forced to leave the house. No one was injured in the fire. The homeowner rescued the family dog. A cat is still missing. “It was one of the fastest fires we've seen,” said Ernst. “It moved incredibly quickly. The home was also on a heavily tiered, sloped lot. A long narrow driveway made firefighter access difficult. Ernst said all firefighters could see as they arrived was “a huge black cloud.” An elecirical faule is the likely cause of the fire. “It took an incredibly long time to excavate,” said Ernst. “There were three flocrs col- lapsed into one.” Meanwhile electrical prob- lems are also a probable cause for Jast Wednesday’s fire on Woodgreen Drive in Caulfeild. Ernst plans to meet with the owner of the home this week. He said there was heavy structural and smoke damage to the house. “It will be a long while before anyone can move back in there.” cn cay DE er Includes up to 5 lites of 1O0w30 Quakerstate 1262 Marine Drive 980-9nS Mon-Sat 8:00ann-600pm, Sun. 9:00arn-5:00pm Expres Nov, 3/2000 § TEXTORMOTIVE™ pera .
