PI WHAT makes tennis great Grant Connell tick? I recently had a chance to talk with North Shore men’s tennis hero Grant Connell. As the current Davis Cup Canadian team captain and a director with Junior Tennis B.C., Grant is helping to ele- vate the level of game play for our local aspiring tennis cham- pions. Q) As the new Davis Cup Captain, compare the level of professional plavers on the ten- nis circuit to the level of play ten vears age. Are there any differences? A) Today's players are incredibly fit and strong. On the men’s side, look at how Andre Agassi kickstarted his career by getting into the best “Helen Kelesi Training Camp shape of his lite and winning the French Open a couple years ago. Obviously Venus and Serena Williams are doing so well because they are big- ger and stronger than the other women. The talent level is the same as 10 years ago — it’s just that everyone is get- tiag bigger and stronger. Q) With the use of perfar- mance-eahancing drugs tn the media spotlight at the last Pan- Am Games and now at the "IF-YOU HAVE FIRESTONE TIRES THAT _ ARE INVOLVED IN ‘THE RECALL... WE CAN HELP! Aj The drug use among athletes is becuminy a tired story. The constant, thagrant abuse of the rules has perma- nently tarnished a lot of peo- ple’s views on the Olympic Games. It’s hard not to get eynical towards some of the events. don’t pretend to know the answer but [do know that something has to change. Q) What was it like to rep- resent Canada at the Olvmpic Gants? A) It was 2 great honour to participate in the Olympics. Seoul was a great experience and the chance to witness first hand the intensity of the SPORTS aving catchup with Grant Connell games was incredible. Tennis is beginning to be more accepted as an Olympic sport and T know that some of the top plavers make it one of their goals to win a medal. Personally, Pll never forget the amazing rush everyone got watching Ben Johnson and Cart Lewis race and then how low everyone was the follow: ing day after the whole steroid controversy erupted. Q) Can yon sell the readers a little bit about the tennis pro- avaus you ave running at the North Shore Winter Club? A) George Lea and I are starting a small tennis acade- my for some younger players. I believe that most junior ten- nis players don’t utilize their court time as well as they could and don’t have the dis- cipline and knowledge of how GOODJYEAR REGATTA 2 All season touring radiat j XNW-EACH Other sizes FROM 9g 15520813. available. So hopefully with this academy We can stress some technique while spending alot of ime sure the kids maxi- mize their court time and hit as many balls as possible. Helen, 1 know you are stare- ing a high performance pro- gram for juniors under 1-4 and under-16 kids, as well as adult programs, and “Future Champs” for tiny tots tennis, which has always been very well received. Together we will be producing fun times at the North Shore Winter Club. Q) Eknow von ave an avid snowboarder — what ather activities do you like to pursue herve on the North Shore when you're not on the courts? A) I really like snowboard- ing but Pm an old man kind of snowboarder. No trees and no jumps. I’m attempting this golf thing but Pve yet to have a great day on the course. My wite and [also run a fair bit, usually the canyon or the Grind. Q) How do vou stay in shape? Are you still a strict vea- erariau? A) It took a while for me to get in to some sort of rou- ting after I retired. 1 really wasn't that motivated to hit tennis balls and my amount of exercise per week definitely declined. My idea of exercise was reading the newspaper while sitting on a stationary bike at level nwo, so about six months ago I started training again and I love it. My diet has pretty much stayed the same as when I played. I’m no longer a strie! vegetarian as I cat some seafood now. [ didn’t run into many vegetarian tennis players but I had no problem getting the necessary protein and nutrients through a proper diet. ; ; — hkelesi@home.com Local athletes place in seaZsummit race’ WITH 500 racers in one race, it would be impossible to list ail the standings — or even the times of all the North Shore par- ticipants.
