~ Miller and Slind show still-life insight
FOR an artist, the still-life must offer a kind of respite.

. There are no blemishes to erase, no egos to massage. There are
_no prickly personalities to contend with, no vain clients to complain
about a nose too large or a hair out of place. .
“There’s no psychology in it,” admits artist Tom Miller, whose
_ duscious still-lifes are on display now through Sunday at West Van’s .
Ferry Building Gallery. “You
don’t worry about (interpreting)
the character of the apple.”
Miller has nothing against
working with people. Though
he’s not done a portrait in years,
he accepts commissions for still-
lifes that commemorate special
_occasions and enjoys working
closely with his clients. Even
more, he enjoys arranging every-
- day objects — bowls of fruit,
simple stonewear, an Oriental

carpet —~ into compositions that convey a sense of harmony and

order. . -

TODAY is a day of sim-
ple pleasures.

I will be sitting back and”
watching my favorite pastime
— you guessed it, the French
Open. It was only on May 19
of this year [ feared T would
not be able to see my favourite
tournament because I had to
have yet another brain tumour
removed from my {ett and
right optic nerves.

My fear was that I would
never be able to sec again. My
eyes are puffy and I’m not tao
fond of my new haircur but I
am on the road to recovery
and that makes me very happy.

My family and friends now
call me “fearless” but I am still
“Hurricane Helen” true at
heart, and today I will share
my journcy with you.
