Dear. Editor: A rose might smell as sweet if ic were called something else, but a newspaper article cannot be both a news story and an editorial, An attempt has been made in Brady Fotheringham’s July 18 article about curling and the North Vancouver Recreation Commission, to create a new animal — an edi- torial news story. The bulk of the article does an adequate job of correcting some of the misconceptions in Fotheringham’s previous piece, but it is prefaced by two paragraphs of absolute fiction. Fotheringhani starts out by stating that the recreation conunissian is working to “set- the ruffled feathers among North Shore curlers” and try- ing to “mitigate damages and resurrect its reputation after closing the Lonsdale recreation centre to curling.” In the next paragraph he says that the iSSION Cr TNESRMOTIVE a, peiiztt SUMMER SPECIALS x ‘2 Lupe, OL& FiLTER 3 Check Phen, test antifreeze, check tires & brakes, visual inspection _ Super Lupe All above with written B.C.A.A., inspection-«:§ eed feport, rotate tires, top up all fluids pa pup “ine. off, iter, top Replace front pads or rear pads or shoes, -* : by a certified technician. He makes it sound as if the curling move was a huge blunder that we are now trying to cover up and apologize for. On the contrary, decision to curlers was a very well-consid- ered move, adopted unani- mously at the commission table and endorsed by both municipal councils. The com- mission is now fulfilling its obligations and previously- move the the made promises to make that Move as smooth as possible. Secondly, the allegation that the commission has dam- aged its reputation and musi now seek to repair it is another piece of fiction. There may be a few people who are trying their best to damage our reputation — people who believe that the commission should be split ap and are looking for a way to do it and win a few votes in the bargain. 1 much doubt, however, that the recreation commis- sion’s reputation has been damaged — at least not in the sof the thousands of enthu- silastic recreation clients: who continue to swim and dance and skate, and the taxpayers who appreciate when an orga- Plus many more in-sfore specials. nization that they support financially is doing its best to use its resources to full advan- tage. The statement thar the recreation — commission is “making, amends for all con- cerned” suggests erroncously thac we think we have made an error, Finally, Fotheringham throws in another opinion with his statement that the “real issue is the shortage of monies available from = othe North Vancouver Reereation Coninission to build new facil- ities.” While the commission may oversee the building of recreation facilitics (as is cur- rently the case with Parkgate and the indoor tennis court) and then operate them, it is the Fresh Local GREEN bf Curling story two North Vancouver munici- palities who decide which capi- tal projects they will undertake, paving for them with taxpayer money, 1 don’¢ believe that that is the “real issue” because it almost suggests that we would build as many facilities as any- one might want as long as we had the money. The reality is that as funding for facilities continues to be tight, it behooves the North Vancouver Recreation Commission to do its best to accommodate the maximum number of people in those facilities that already exist.
