JOIN IN THE GAMES The City of North Vancouver and the District of North Vanccuver will host che BC Games for Athietes with a Disability, from July 7 co july 11. Over 650 participants from across the province and the U.S. will attend, competing in thirteen different sports such as boccia ball, cycling, sailing and ws equestrian. “I don’t think it has yet been realized what an incredible opportunity these Games are for North Vancouver,” said Kaisa McCandless, the Director of Promotions.According to McCandiess, the Games are not only about sport, but also represent an important opportunity for members of the community to volunteer their time enjoy meeting people from all over the province, and develop an awareness about the issues people with disabilities face. “Being a recent university graduate myself,” said McCandless. “I realize how | challenging it is for young people to get their first job. Emplicyers expect a new employee to possess a combination of education and r alevant experience in their field of employment before they will even give someone a second look. Sponsorship oppertunities are also available. IN MEMORIUM A BENCH MARK The City's Park Bench Dedication Program provides an opportunity for reflection and remembrance. Designed to withstand many years of Pacific coast weather, the bench- es are constructed from farmed tropical wood, harvested from tree farms. Each bench comes with a solid brass plaque that accommo- dates a 50-lecter message written by the donor. Both the bench and commemorative plaque are maintained by the City. THE CITY OF NORTH VANCOUVER’S YEAR 2000 PROJECT Since 1996, the City of North Vancouver has been working towards achieving Year 2000 compliance.A review of all of the City’s hardware and software has been completed and all systems are expected to be Year 2000 compliant by June 1999. WORKING IN PARTNERSHIP FOR Y2K COMPLIANCY In 1998 the City of North Vancouver launched a review of all our essential systems and equipment that contain embedded chips. But the City’s ability to be Year 2000 compliant will also depend on our key service suppliers and equipment manufacturers. We are currently working with these companies to ensure Year 2000 compliancy. To date over 80% of them have indicated that the services or products they supply to the City will not be impacted. In a few cases, the City has ordered upgrades. NO FALSE ALARMS ANTICIPATED Alarm companies and elevator companies within North Vancouver have been contacted by the City to ezisure that they are aware of the problem, thus preventing numerous false alarms at the RCMP and the Firehall. The City’s Year 2000 Project has also included checking with the utility companies, the GVRD, and others.
