& — Friday, June 5, 1998 — North Shore News Bikers are nota threat to mountains Dear Editor: Re: mountain biking. T have some comments regarding wo May 24 North Shore News articles (War in the woods and Trail trials trig- ger summit call). E guess you hare to pick a side” to write something that doesn't sound like mush, bat these articles were so fill of bureaucratic rhetoric, I couldn't believe they were in the News. As far as damage to the trails, mountains, and the ecology in general, vou appear zo be misinformed as to the real culprits. Rain and gravity have been the detrimental elements tol- towed by horses. Pretty diffi- cult to legislate against nature and horses. Where do you draw the line? Is a mountain bike tire doing more damage than a hiker’s shoe? None of these activities is going to level the mounvia oor change the sourse of the Seymour River. Sheesh! Lighten up! Mountain biking is a pretty benign sporr. I's not like we want to ride motorcycles on the trails or log the watershed. There are a fet more dramatic eco-bandwagons to jump on before you start attacking someone riding a bicyele. One fast thing. Having lived on the North Shore for nearly 48 years, one of the nicest things I see is the 12- to }4-year-olds out Gate trails developing their biking skills. It gives me great hope for my baby boy. T can only hope thar he will be more interest- ed in this healthy lifestyle than hanging out at the 7-Eleven. | also hope he can do it legally, One thing | know tor sure: the mountains will still. be there for him.
