Dreaming a
brief dream

DURING THIS period
of spiritual quickening,
know that language
derives its life from life
and gives it back as
myth, as metaphor,
which has a counter-life
‘of its own.

In a world of blinding,
accelerating change, jan-
guage can no longer fashion
its metaphors fast crough to
stabilize the average person
with a spiritual counter life,
and so self-knowledge can .
deteriorate to a moral blur,
like the. snow of electrons on

~ a television screen. The
world (which is us) plunges
on without metaphor. .

Historians speak of “The
Enlightenment,” or “The
Baroque Era,” or “La Belle
Epoque” without fear that
they are describing develop-
ments in only a fraction of

. the world. Now the metaphor

. must.be global. This is the
age of the hand-held: TV
channel changer.

The electronic worldmind
—a global mass conformed
by. what passes through its
billion plus eyes, into the
collective. brain — has a
very short attention span
and dreams brief dreams.

‘When history vaporizes

itself this way, its events
streaming off.instantly into
‘electrons fired into space

-- and then recombining in

-. human living rooms and

minds around the world,

then people face a surreal

pluralism of. realities.

Restlessly we reach for .
the mind-altering channel
changer. I certainly do, CNN,
X-Files, E.R., PBS, Prinie
Time Live, CBC, Discovery
Channel, Air Farce, Siskel
and Ebert, NightLine,
Letterman, etc. Highly enser-
taining, but, how entertained
can we get? It’s us. 1 love it,
but, AAARRGHH! ,

The old adage that for
every step forward there
must be two steps ‘“back-
ward” applied to the 1980s
when reactionary energies
held sway. Laws are now
being passed curtailing cer-
tain liberties due to devas-_
tating environmental
changes first observed in
1988, Society is being regu-
lated and the general public
mood is sober. There are
rumblings of discontent
with Uranus now in
Aquarius.

“New Dispensation”
forces are beginning to
come into their own. When
Neptune enters Aquarius in
latter 1998, we will know
we are there (new “age”).
