Lubor Trubka, 55, is one of the
rare individuals comfortable with
both aspects, He moves from one
realm to the other naturally and,
also naturally, he’s an architect.

Further, his particular mix of
the two schools is unique because
of his European education where
a grounding in engineering is
mandatory for aspiring architects.

Educated in his native (then)

Republic and Slovakia), Trubka
emigrated to Canada in 1969 for
the “obvious reasons.” These

As a promising architect fresh’
out of school, Trubka had-
choice of two locales to launch his
career — Sweden or South Africa.
Although initially: he had- an:
inkling to go to the more “exotic
South Africa, the troubling politi-:
cal events at home forced him'to
go to the place he saw himself set-
tling in permanently. ‘

While there, he met several,
Canadian graduate students who :
eventually convinced him to come
to Canada with tall tales of the;
West Coast’s natural beauty an
laid back lifestyle. One of the:
Canadians he encountered: was
none other than West Vancouve
Capilano MLA Jeremy Dalton who,
recalls Trubka as a “very forth
right” individual. . ;

“I always suspected he'd’ be
very successful, he had very obvi
ous taleni,” recatled Dalton.

Upon his arrival Trubka settled,

work with wood, a product he was
unfamiliar with, in part, because:
of the scarcity of. the material in
Europe and the resultant lack of
attention it receives there. :
The rest is history. His work
with wood has received popular’
acclaim including the recent
Fraser Valley Real Estate Board -
Award of Excellence for his work;
on the South Surrey ice rink in.:93
and a B.C. Hydro PowerSmart:

Abbotsford ice arena (the new |
Vancouver Library took first
place).
Trubka eventually returned to.
