NEWS pnoto Cindy Goodruan THE KONDRATEVA family (left to right) Dmitri, 12, Dennis, 15, Karina, 45, and Eugene, 45, find living on the North Shore a “paradise” compared to titeir former fife in Georgia, USSR. Immigrant family finds ready assistance in “this paradise’ From page 2 eligible for a year’s worth of adjustment assistance. It runs out in November, and the Kondratevas are deter- mined not to have to switch over to welfare. Karina has aot found paid work as an English teacher here because she requires a certificate from the B.C. College of Teachers. In the meantime she volunteers as an instructor for the North Shore Multicultural Society. She had a part-time job in the spring as a playroom supervisor with North Shore Family Services’ drop-in family program. “It makes me self-confident that already 1 work somewhere,” she said. “I am a member of society.” Eugene is qualified as both an electrical and a mechanical engineer. His work experience includes two years in Vietnam, but to be an engineer in Canada he must re-qualify. Eugene has taken English lessons at the Lucas Centre and combs the newspapers regu- larly..Attempts to sell books and vacuum cleaners haven’t worked out for him. Both the senior Kondratevas have attended a job- finding club to learn how to write resumes and suc- ceed in job interviews. Only Dennis has found a steady part-time job, working at McDonald's. A straight-A student last year, Dennis will have to maintain his marks if he is to be allowed to keep that position, Karina said with an eye to his future suc- cess. Meanwhile, like Dennis, Dmitri is switching from the ESL program to a standard school program this fall. The Kondratevas can’t afford to be proud. They have availed themselves of the North Shore Food Bank and the services offered at North Shore Harvest. They have been befriended by members of the congregation at Lynn Valley’s Full Gospel Church, who were especially kind when Karina broke her ankle May 31 and was immobile for a brief period. This new life is taxing —- there’s no question about it. “It takes time, it takes your nerves, it takes your life,” said Karina. Yet she refers to the North Shore as “this par- adise.” “We are happy. Children can study here, (it’s a) normal way of life. They are not afraid to be shot i in the street.” She'd like to be able to sponsor her parents to move here, but first things first. “My goal is to get a job,” she said, “and to stand firmly on my own feet.” LU OPTICAL: AN ALL-CANADIAN COMPANY KEEPING DOLLARS IN CANADA SINGLE VISION GLASSES FRAMES & PLASTIC LENSES I 45-4800 No. # Parkside a6 to Powers tor - 6.00 with 2 cyl.
