Budget forgets shipbuil Fram Page 1 ernment spending cuts, Collins said, while the remaining 30 per cent will be attacked thraugh tax increases. A total of $1.5 billion will be raised through the new federal taxes. Federal sales tax will be raised from 1! to 12 per cent, while the income tax increase translates to approximately $150 per year for people earning $30,000 annually. Salaries of all MPs and senators will be cut by $1,000. The federal government has also decreed that the post office debt be dissolved within two years. Coiiins also pointed to the gov- ernment’s commitment to establish an international banking centre in Vancouver as one of the budget’s highlights. Giving Wednesday's budget a B-minus rating, North Van- couver-Seymour NDP candidate David Schreck said that while the assault on the deficit was laudable, the single-mindedness of that assault ignored such vital factors as unemployment, interest rates and economic growth. If ignored, Schreck said those factors could result in the gov- ernment’s fosing control of the deficit. He said the three per cent in- come tax increase coupled with the one per cent rise in federal sales tax will work against economic stimulation. The projected slow down in economic growth from 4.5 per cent in 1985 to 3.2 per cent in 1987, Schreck said, would create an equal slow down in the growth of ding industry the Canadian tax base. He added that there was nothing for B.C. in the budget, and nothing for such local North Shore industries as shipbuilding, which he said had ‘‘been abandoned by the government." Vice-president for the Marine Workers and Boilermakers In- dustrial Union (MWBIU) Bill Scott concurred with Schreck. He said that while the gov- ernment planned to raise foreign aid payments by 15.6 per cent, its budget failed to address the plight of the unemployed. 986} ‘oe Gore; sesydx3 “> “anjoy-one’co!
