Women deserve safer place Bear Editor: Oh joy! Another — bikini-clad Sunshine Girl (Jan. 13). And so soon after the delightful letter from Perry J. Scammell (Dec. 30) claiming that this feature is “harmiess fun’ and that ‘sex always sells.” Yes, let’s perpetuate the image of women as pretty objects for men to admire and play with and then discard like pieces of trash. And while we're at it, let’s make sure that the image is of ‘attractive’? women so that those who do not meet society’s stand- ards of beauty are sure to know that they are less worthy objects. The connection between this kind of feature and the recent glut of news regarding the antics of one David Alexander Snow and others like him may be difficult to see, but it is there nonetheless for those who care to look. How about focusing less on ap- pearance and instead featuring people who make a real contribu- tion to our community? Can we not find sunshine disfigured, or grizzled, male or female? Please do away with the atrocity which is the current feature. Women deserve a safer and more valued place in society. Yes, even on the North Shore. Michele Satanove North Vancouver Show more than ‘shampoo shots’ Dear Editor: Here we go with episode number 985 on the ‘Sunshine Girl ... Do we, or Don’t we? Considering that none of your girls are kidnapped off the streets and forced to appear against their will in your illustrated feature, 1 fail to see what all the continuing fuss is about. . My biggest complaint, as usual, is thal the photos are purely ‘‘sham- poo shots,”’ showing only their heads and shoulders. There simply must be more to an attractive girl than just that ... In fact, I’m so old, | can even remember when Sunshine Girls appeared in their full completeness, suitably attired in swimwear or stylish sports- wear. Just like your girls now, in the fashion features. Ever think of combining the two? And relax — when the day comes that youth and beauty are no longer popular, then start to agonize over the Sunshine Girl. Mean- while, let’s just enjoy, shall we?
