Classmates create transplant fund A GROUP of North Shore high school friends from the class of 1974 has set up a fund for a fellow schoolmate’s seriously ill child. By Anna Marie D’Angelo News Reporter North Vancouver resident Pat Crowe and nine other 1974 ‘Handsworth graduates have estab- lished the. ‘‘Kaitlin Transplant Fund’? at the Toronto. Dominion Bank in Edgemont Village. . Kaitlin is the 3%-year-old daughter of Ontario resident Joan Faulkner Atkinson. The child is scheduled to receive a heart/lung . transplant in Pittsburgh soon. Although the Ontario medical plan has agreed to pay for the $300,000 operation, the parents’ expenses, including travel and ac- commodation, are not covered. The parents’ expenses are estimated to be $60,000. Atkinson grew up on the North Shore, where her parents, Bob and Gussie Faulkner, and sister, Gail Faulkner, still live. “IT think anyone who knew Joan would really like to help her out.in this time of need in her life. I think she was such a giving per- son and now is her time to receive something back,’ said Crowe. Kaitlin, who is a triplet, was diagnosed with idiopathic pulmonary hypertension when she was three years old. The little-understood condition causes lungs. to deteriorate and severely damages’ the heart as it overworks to compensate for the failing lungs. Three trust funds have been es- tablished for the Atkinson family. They currently contain approxi- mately $10,000. Besides the North Shore fund, another fund was set up by Atkinson’s employer, the external affairs department in Ottawa. And a third fund was set up by community members in Kemp- tville, Ontario, where the family lives. Crowe said Kaitlin’s prospects for finding a matching donor were not a major problem at this point, although doctors said the little girl would have three months to live if she did not receive a transplant now. Crowe describes Atkinson as someone who has always been an accomplished, busy and giving person. “This is exactly Juan. She would have triplets,’ said Crowe. The ‘‘Kaitlin’s Transplant Fund’? is set up at the Toronto Dominion Bank, 3190 Edgemont Blvd. For more 980-9025. information, call = KASTLE 5, VERTECH SKI Value 600.00 i/2 PRICE ENTRY LEVEL SPECIAL PALE ADULT SKI wiLOOK GP INDING value to $451.98 ROSSIGNOL 3Ti w/GEZE G-53 BINDING 239” ROSSIGNOL STS wiSALGMON 777 value to 3 5o*9 $702.00 KASTLE X-5 w/SALOMON QUADRAX 5 389° ALL PACKAGES INCLUDE INSTALLATION value to $456.98 value to $727.00 Photo submitted FORMER NORTH SHORE resi- dent Joan Faulkner Atkinson, her husband, Weldin and 31- year-old triplets Claire (left), Emily and Kaitlin have had friends and family rally around them as Kaitlin awaits a heart and lung transplant in Pitts- burgh.
