Though it originally raised con- cerns about traffic and vehicle ac- cess, the advisory planning com- mittee recommended council ap- prove the rezoning application after it reviewed a traffic study provided by the applicant. But several area homeowners charged that the pub will only create neighborhood problems. Dalia Gotlieb-Tanaka said the proposed pub would destroy the lifestyle enjoyed by area residents. She said the drinking establish- ment would only cater to occu- pants of several nearby motels on Capilano Road. “We think it will have a very Negative impact. The location is very bad. To encounter even one person who has used alcohol ... I'm going to be afraid. “Then there is the traffic prob- lem. We all know how dangerous this road is. Some people will come out of the pub over the legal limit. This is outrageous.”’ She added that it only takes one or two intoxicated people to cause a problem. Gottlieb-Tanaka also noted that there are several other drinking establishments people can go to in the area such as the Avalon Hotel, the Pemberton Station neighbor- hood pub and the Park Royal Hotel. ‘We're very alarmed. Some- thing went wrong in the approval stages.” Several area homeowners delivered a fetter to council outlin- ing their objections to the propos- ed neighborhood pub. Another area homeowner, Jerome Irwin, said he attended the public information meeting held on the issue and was told by a district planning department staff member that the pub would be good for tourism. “T think the district should be put on the carpet over this. **Business always comes first and the human element is second- ary. How do they know it will be vood for the community?’’ said Irwin.
