MAILBOX Crist ‘hijacking’ fund An open letter to the citizens of the District of North Vancouver: 1 feel it is my duty, at this junc- ture, to bring to public awareness the economic scandal! that is being perpetrated by the local golf course elite, their elected political servants at the district hall and a compliant municipal staff. 1 am referring to the proposed Northl- ands golf course. Now before a standing commit- tee of council is consideration of a motion by Coun. Crist to hijack the district’s heritage fund to fi- nance the building of the Northl- ands golf course. The inappropri- ateness of this use of the heritage fund is manifest. Under the Municipal Act, pro- jects requiring significant amounts of borrowed capital must be referred to the public for approval by way of a plebiscite. In his motion Coun. Crist is at- tempting to circumvent the demo- cratic rights of the district citizens by slipping the $14 million needed to build the course out of the back door by way of the heritage fund. On this cold November day I don’t remember the pain and the crying. I never saw the blood and the dying. I shall take this opportunity to remind citizens that aot only is $14 million required? to build this course, but $48 million in land sale revenues would be lost by the abandonment of the original Northlands Neighbourhood Plan. What could be done throughout our neighborhoods with $62 mil- lion? I will add that thete are many more flaws — environmental, social, technical — as the golf course plan stands. Coun. The one that took you back home, Gr the one we sang to bring you home. Remember they fought for you and I. Remember they didn’t choose 10 die. But they took the risks of our love For future children and God above. When we gather to mourn for these men, Remember to praise and honor them. Admire all their struggles and strife, For they died and gave us life. Remember them not as a martyr or pawn, But remember their love, today and every dawn. And you'll remember them the right way.
