Compost garden display opens at Park and Tilford DURING LIFE’S trying periods, one tries aot to lapse into bitterness, but it’s not always easy. That was the case last Saturday, when, after approxiinately four weeks of consistently sunny, hot, pleasant weather, the day for the opening of the North Van Com- post Demonstration Garden arriv- ed and the heavens opened. Lying in bed early Saturday morning, listening to the downpour that would soon turn into a rather awe-inspiring hailstorm, I tried to be happy for the forest, badly in need of a long-overdue rain. [I tried to cheer rayself by thinking of the boost this would give our drinking water reservoirs. It didn’t work. However, I had underestimated the hardiness of the North Shore people, who aren’t daunted by the prospect of getting a bit sodden. A good number of gardeners and would-be composters turned out to the ribbon-cutting for the new composter site, located in the southeast corner of the Park and Tilford Garden on Main Street in North Vancover. The skies cleared long enough for everyone to ge a good look at Peggy Trendell-Whittaker ECOINFO the composters on display and to have their gardening questions an- swered by City Farmer’s Mike Levenston and North Shore News columnist Geoff Tobiasson. If you’re in the market for a composter, visit the garden while the spring bulbs are still bloom- ing. Composting information is posted, along with phone numbers for further information. The next environmental unveil- ing is of the North Shore's tele- phone book recycling program. While we’re not planning an of- ficial ceremonial toss of the tele- phone tome into a collection bin, we are encouraging people to keep their old phone books out of the trash. There are about 60,000 house- holds on the North Shore, each with a yellow pages and a white pages. That’s !20,000 books, which, if I’ve done my calcuia- tions correctly, would form a pile nearly five kilometres high if stacked on top of each other. Here’s another way to look at it: the phone books are 28 cm long. Combining yellow and white pages that’s 56 cm per household.
