Peter Jensen, a journeyman carpenter, was part of an interna- tional exchange program which saw three B.C. carpenter appren- tices travel to Sweden where they worked alongside Swedish con- struction workers. Traditionally, apprentices train- ed under a master craftsman for several years and then went on the road to learn techniques common to other places. The term journeyraan comes from this prac- tice. “Fhe basic principles of con- struction are the same in Sweden as they are here,’’ said Jensen. “But they use different techniques and they have different tools. They have one saw that combines two of the kind we use. They seem to have more time to perfect things over there.” Three apprentices from Sweden arrived in Vancouver earlier this month and are now working on a downtown Vancouver construction site. They will travel co other parts of the province later in their stay. But Jensen thinks the Swedes may be in for some surprises. “They’re more safety conscious over there, not in so much of a rush,” said Jensen. ‘‘Sites in Sweden are well-organized so even though people seem to be taking it easy over there, they get the job done pretty quickly.’’ He added that in Sweden con- struction workers work in teams of 30 or 40 and the foreman is more like a team leader who goes to companies and gets work for the group. “He negotiates bonuses and takes care of quality control negotiations with the company,” said Jensen. ‘“‘The team is made up of different trades who all belong to the same union. There is less squabbling over who does what work, less conflict: on the job.** Aside from work, Jensen and the other apprentices were treated to a fishing trip above the Aretic circle and a white water canoe trip. Jensen, who races a 26-foot Thunderbird at home, managed to take part in a 350 mile race in the Baltic Sea. “E really enjoyed go back in a minute."* Jean Gordon myself...1d Melody Jensen Dr. Alan Haynes & Associates @ SATISFIED WITH YOUR WORK?
