SELECTING THE RIGHT FERTILIZER Fertilizer comes in many formulae from a large number of manufactureres and sometimes presents a confusing picture to you, the gardener. Simple remembering the meaning of the identitying numbers wil! help - they are always in the same order, Nitrogen-Phosphorus-Potash, or N-P-K. Lawns require more nitrogen, and you should use 2 12-4-8 formula in spring and something like 18-6-12 or 20-10-5 in the warmer weather. Almost without exception flowering broad leaved evergreens ( Rhodo's, Azaleas, Camellias, etc.) need the reverse combination, and two common ones are 4-12-8 or 4- 12-10. On vegetables and annual flowers use 4-10-10 or 8-20-20 { the latter is simply twice as strong as the former). Some people simply get the all purpose 6-8-6 for everything, but you will get better results if you use the proper plant nutrients.
