Successful telethons don’t just happen. They take months of planning, tremendous organiza- tion, and hundreds of willing vol- unteers — and a person with the determination and diplomacy of a saint to pull it all together. Timmy’s Christmas Telethon was fortunate to have such a fellow for the past two years. His name is Jan Nablo and he lives very quietly on Wildwood Lane in West Van. While you never see his hand- some face at any time during the 21-hour CBC-TV fundraiser, he’s backstage, cracking the whip, watching the clock, calling every move. It was under his precise direc- tion that Timmy’s once again became the most successful telethon ir, Canadian history, rais- ing a whopping $4,157,342, breaking their own 1988 record of $3.7 miltion. But the real story about Jan is that just after Christmas tast year, he took very ill and was diagnosed by doctors as suffering from pan- creatitis. They immediately book- ed him into St. Paul’s Hospital where he stayed for the following four months! During his long hospitalization, he suffered every complication possible, from a blood clot follow- ing the removal of his gall bladder, to staph infection, to pneumonia. It looked so uncomfortable, but he said everything was just fine!
