the library is a vital, necessary
resource for pertinent and up-to-
date information on the Who's,
Why's, When's and Where's.

“At the same time the library
itself is a calming, tranquil oasis
away from the breakneck pace of
modern living. It's a place for
reflection and enjoyment, and of-
fers a chance to expand your mind
and lear, more about the world
around us.

“But probably the best part of
the library, for me, is being able to
take a piece of that same serenity
heme with me so that, when those
few precious moments of unhur-
tied time arise, | can settle down
to my favorite pastime and read a
good book.”

Nowadays, it includes recordings,
not only of music but of the voice,
the ‘Listen for Pleasure’ audio
cassettes which are such a boon
for those who cannot ead. Then,
there are the video cassettes
where one can see such great
classics of the cinema as Alex-
ander Nevsky and The Third Man.

“But the library means most to
me as a data bank which can be
reached without a computer. In
my writing, } have to check facts:
When was Woodstock? Was Pierre
Laporte murdered before or after
the proclamation of the War
Measures Act? Etc. To find out, |
get hold of the Reference
Department of the West Van-
couver Library, and Steve Williams
or a lady there whose name |
don’t know ceme up quickly with
the answers.”

work for the Transcontinental
without the help of the West Van-
couver Memorial Library. It’s very
convenient. It is astonishing that
— I don’t want to sound patroniz-
ing — considering the size of the
library | have found a great deal of
information which | might not
have found anywhere else.

“Quite apart from that,
whenever | enter | have the feeling
that I’m in the private library of a
friend. It isn’t. overwhelming, it’s
not difficult to find the books and |
love a little corner by the window
where | can sit dewn in the
lovely chairs and relax while |
read.

assistants there. Coming out of the
library you are facing a garden --
the Memorial garden — and it
seems to be a part of the library.
