Sludge to be recycled THE GREATER Vancouver Regional District board of direc- tors has approved $100,000 for the first year of a three-year project that is aimed at solving the long- Standing probler: of sewage sludge disposal from Lions Gate and its other three Lower Mainland sewage plants. The program involves pilot testing of the nutrient-rich sludge by recycling it for silviculture. A report prepared by GVRD staff points out that sewage sludge is used in many areas of the worid to provide fertilizer products ‘‘for agriculture and silviculture pur- poses, municipal purposes in- cluding fertilization of parks and golf courses, top cover for landfills to enhance lawn and tree growth and retard erosion....’’ According to the report, approx- imately 60 per cent of Seattle’s sewage sludge is used on commer- cial forestry plots to intprove tree growth, While all four of the GVRD’s sewage plants extract sewage sludge from the sewage they pro- cess, only the Lions Gate plant discharges treated sludge with its regular sewage outflow. The sludge discharge, according to the GVRD’s liquid waste study, is a major source of First Narrows water contamination. GVRD plans calf for a discon- tinuation of that discharge in favor of a land disposal system. Digested sludge from the GVRD’s Annacis and Iona Island sewage treatment plants is current- ly stored in lagoons for drying, but there is no effective means of disposing of the sludge from the two plants. At. Richmond’s Lulu Island plant che material is burned. Earlier this year, the GVRD ap- proved $300,000 to study and sclect sludge dewatering equipinent for the Lions Gate plant and for the purchase and installation of dechlorination equipment.
