Nurses at LGH given top marks MATERNITY NURSES at Lions Gate Hospital have received high marks from their patients. ” Results of a recent questionnaire show an overall high degree of satisfaction with the care provided in the labor and delivery unit, the Special Care Nursery and on the post-partum floor. ““It is important for nurses car- ing for childbearing families to be receptive to the way their patients perceive the care they receive in the hospital,’’ said Wendy Winslow, LGH director of nursing, obstetrics/quality assurance. “As part of an evaluation of nursing care, we distributed ques- tionnaires to 150 maternity pa- tients discharged in July and August, asking them to comment on their experience in the hospital. Fifty-one per cent of the question- naires. were returned with descrip- . tions of a wide range of activities undertaken by the nursing staff that made the labor, birth, paren- ting and early post-partum period a wonderfully satisfying experience for the woman and her family.”” The women praised the suppor- tive atmosphere created by nurses providing encouragement, support, advice ana information. But the women did not ‘find all aspects of their hospital stay as ROBERT MUSTO BRADBROOKE CRAWFORD &GREEN BRADBROOKE, CRAWFORD & GREEN is pleased to announce that ROBERT MUSTO and PADDI ARTHUR (formerly Boyle), have joined the firm as Associates. The outdated and inadequate physical facility, particularly the labor and delivery area, was repeatedly Criticized in the ques- tionnaire comments. -The labor room was described as “tiny, shabby and depressing” and the delivery room was found to be “intimidating and clinical.’’ The questionnaire three further concerns in the early post-partum period. The women were unable to get enough rest, the visiting hours were too long and teaching for new parents was not as-extensive or as consistent as the patients would have liked. “The results of the survey have - given the hospital a clear message about how maternity nursing can be enhanced at Lions Gate Hospi- tal,’ said Winslow. ‘‘Plans are under way on a number of levels to remedy the problems that were identified by the patients.” On one level the Greater Van- couver Regional District has ap- proved $1.4 million for renova- tions to the LGH maternity area.
