inspect chimney when

weather is stili warm

NOW IS the time for that annual
chimney check-up.

Before the fall and winter
seasons set in, inspect your

chimney, particularly if your
heating system is oil, natural gas or
propane.

With these fuels, your furnace
does not stay running long enough
to keep the chimney continuously
hot. That’s when condensation of
the water in the smoke can occur
and why you see so many chimneys
with mortar and brick
deteriorating, and liners crumbl-
ing. This moisture can also blister
the paint on the wall covering the
chimney.

WHEN PURCHASING a
replacement light bulb, read the
accompanying replacement in-
structions or caution marking
carefully,

According to the Canadian
Standards Association (CSA), cau-
tion marking on some incandescent
lamps requires clarification. Con-
sumers say that the caution mark-
ing ‘‘Burn Base Down’’ can be
confusing.

Vancouver and Toronto Consumer
Advisory Panels, and Winnipeg
Community Advisory Panel, a

rates in many cases, and lowered
thermostat settings have also
resulted in chimney deterioration.

Cold air is more dense than
warm air. As air cools, it can form
a column of heavy air in the
chimney. When your furnace starts
up, it tries to drive this air up the
chimney.

Sometimes it is not successful,
and the products of combustion
spill back into the furnace room.
Such spillage can also occur if
there is a blockage in the chimney
caused by rubble, a dead bird or
small animal, or even a bird’s nest.

burner, they could become lethal.
You can detect spillage from an oil
furnace by smell, or from a gas

furnace when there is a high degree
of moisture spilling from the draft
hood, or if there are signs of paint
discoloration around the draft
hood.

Make sure your chimney is clear
of obstruction by holding a mirror
inside the inspection or clean out
opening at the bottom of the
chimney to ensure there is daylight
at the top.

Loose or crumbling masonry can
be detected by a visual inspection.
Call in a specialist if you think
there is a problem.

It is important that homeowners
check their chimneys at regular in-
tervals. Poorly maintained
chimneys and heating systems can
lead to tragic accidents, such as
carbon monoxide poisoning.

be improved, with the addition of
symbols, This would clarify usage

‘‘Burn Base Down" means that
the light bulb should be installed
and used with the bulb portion in
an upright position. Installing it
any other way (sideways or with
the butb upside down) could lead
to overheating and even a short
circuit.

Consumers are strongly advised
to check for instructions/caution
markings when buying light bulbs
and before discarding the package.
