FESTIVITIES FEATURE LOGGING EVENTS Squamish celebrates centennial anniversary SQUAMISH DAYS ‘festivities kick off this year with a host of activi- ties that include the World Chain- pionship Logger’s Sports Show and the municipality's 100th bir- thday celebrations. Activities start July 28 with a Timber Queen Pageant and Ball, in which young women compete to become Miss Squamish Timber Queen and reign over the weekend festivities and events in the coming year. July 29 sees the arrival of the recreational vehicles in the Recre- ational Vehicle Rally, which held in conjunction with Squamish Days attracts RV owners from all across North America. Also held July 29 is a warm-up to the Jogging show. The World Championship Powersaw Carving Competition will see contestants using a power saw to carve such items as animals, chairs and even work boots. A Country Hoedown Dance at the civic centre ends the July 29 activities with dancing to music from one of Vancouver’s top country and western bands, A big day for children is July 30, with a selection of activities laid on just for little folks. Following the Kiwanis Children’s Sports, novice and intermediate class logging competition begins at the sports grounds, During this event, beginners and budding world champions compete side-by-side to win and move into the world standings. Ending the July 30 events is the Logger’s Stomp Dance at the civic centre, where 1,200 people are ex- pected to jam the dance floor and dance until] a.m. The World Championship Log- ger’s Sports Show — the event for which the entire town has been eagerly wailing — is held July 31 following a pancake breakfast and parade. Spectators will see loggers from all over the world compete in a variety of logging competitions in- cluding the tree climb, springboard chop, log birling, chokerman's race and standing block chop. Following the championship logging show will be fireworks at dusk at the civic centre. The festival wraps up Aug. I with a Truck Loggers’ Rodeo, where top drivers in the valley pilot a fully laden logging truck thromgh a pylon-studded course to test t.cir driving skills. Art therapy workshop offered THE VANCOUVER Art Therapy Institute is holding an experimental art therapy workshop led by Dr. Martin A. Fischer of Toronto. Dr. Fischer has spent a life-long career as a _ psychiatrist, group psychotherapist, and pioneer in art therapy in Canada. In his workshops, Fischer helps participants gain insight into their own and others’ unconscious sym- bolic expressions using the medium Of art.
