Using a group format, the workshops will attempt to help both overcome the daunting bar- riers each face in establishing a foothold in the local job market. Gordon Chow, North Van- couver's supervisor of employment services, said the workshops will be more efficient than individual counselling and also provide the mutual psychological support pro- vided by groups. The workshops will be offered on the last two Wednesdays of every month, starting July 20 with the first youth session. An_ initial workshop for the long-term unemployed will be held Aug. 24. The eight-hour workshops will be broken into two four-hour morning sessions. Chow said youth and the long- term unemployed make up a large percentage of the area’s overall unemployed statistics. In any given month, he said, the North Vancouver employment centre deals with 450 unemployed young people, and, of his depart- ment’s 6,598 claimants, 1,396 have been unemployed for 26 months or more. Warren, M.D. as Executive Director of the new Screening Mam- mography program in B.C. Dr. Warren obtained her FRCP(C) in 1973 and for the past fourteen years has been a practicing radiologist. She has been teaching mammo- graphy since 1975 and has designed the only formal training course in mammography in the province which is given annually to final year, UBC radiology residents. Inaddition to talks on breast cancer screening, technique and diagnosis at various radiology post-graduate courses in B.C., Dr. Warren has been a popular and highly respected lecturer over- seas in Australia, New Zealand, South America, Germany and in the United States. For the past eleven years, Dr. Warren has been a member of the B.C.M.A. Cancer Committee and More recently of the B.C. Radio- logical Society Mammography Committee. Since May of 1987, she has been a member of the Sub- Committee of the Breast Tumour Group of the Cancer Control Agency of B.C., including the work- ing group on Pilot Project Design, the B.C. Radiological Society Mam- mography Committee Draft Pro- posal, Cancer Committee Coordina- tion and the presentation to the Medical Advisory Board of the Medical Services Commission in support of the Breast Screening Sub-Committee Proposal. The Mammography Screening pilot pro- ject was made possible by a $265,000 grant to the Cancer Con- trot Agency of British Columbia from the B.C. Ministry of Health. The pro- ject is a collaborative effort between the Cancer Control Agency of B.C.. the B.C. Medical Association, the University of B.C., the Canadian Cancer Society and the B.C.
