Exercise for women promoted in W. Van THE EMPORTANCE of physical activily for worten has long been recognized by health professionals. A strong, fit body is more easily able to withstand the rigors of both child-bearing and child-rear- ing, and for post-menopausal women, exercise aids in preventing the bone loss often accompanied by hormonal changes. The West Vancouver Recreation Centre is presenting a unique pro- gram that affers three levels of ac- tivity at once. Tt is designed to mect the needs of women in various stages of their lives, from pregnancy through = child-rearing and beyond. Infant care, child care and education preschool programs ure available at the same time, The class is divided into three exercise groups. The pre-natal group goes for a walk or rides the eycles during the aerobic section. Other women choose between either a jump or no-jiimp group depending on their preference. in this way the pregnant partici- pants are able to stay with their friends after giving birth by return- ing to this class and just switching to another level of exercise as their needs change. Social activity is a very impor- ‘tant. part of the program, with planned monthly socials and more informal networking and support. The instructors are very en- thusiastic, says the centre, even when they get calls at 3 a.m. from ecstatic brand new fathers, and all new moms get a card signed by the whole class. Mothers usually rush back to show off their new baby before they are able to start exer- cising. Two women who are very glad they participated are Debbie Serin and Carol Still. Says Serin, who recently moved on to a more in- tense level class: ‘J can't wait to get pregnant again so that | can go back.”’ Still agrees, “I got support as well as fitness and my little boy loved the playcare and socializing afterwards.”’ Many older women or those wanting a milder exercise program take advantage of this multi-level women’s workout, which enables them to also enjoy the children during the coffee and conversation period after class. Classes are Tuesday and Thurs- day at 10:15 a.m. For further in- formation call 926-3266.
