The kids have to go back to school, the pace picks up at work, and community meetings and activities that were put on hold for the summer resume again. For many peopie, it’s also time to return to the routine of cleaning the house. A good place to start is with the kitchen, which could probably use some freshening up after the hot, sticky summer. A solution of baking soda will clean and deodorize kitchen ap- pliances. It is effective at dissolving grease and dirt and absorbing odors, yet it is non-abrasive, so it won’t scratch appliance finishes. Baking soda is also economical. Just one box will solve most clean- ing needs, replacing the many cleaning sprays, creams, soaps, and pastes we’re accustomed to buying. Here are some helpful cleaning tips for putting kitchens back in shape after a summer hiatus: *Dishwashers — For dishwashers, use the standard solution of four tbsp. baking soda and one quart of water to clean food film which may accumulate along the inside of the dishwasher door. Also wipe down the outside of the dishwasher. When adding dirty dishes, sprinkle a handful (4 cup) of bak- ing soda on the bottom of the dishwasher to keep it fresh and free of odors between loads. It’s a great way to save on energy bills, too, because the dishwasher is run only when it’s full. * Microwave Ovens — to clean and deodorize microwave interiors and exteriors, mix a solution of two tbsp. baking soda and two cups of water. Be sure. to also clean the rubber seal around the door to ensure that it closes tightly and prevents microwaves from escap- ing. For cooked-on splatters and spills, sprinkle dry baking soda on a damp cloth and rub lightly. Rinse and buff dry. For stubborn odors, leave an open box of baking soda inside, but be sure to remove the baking soda before using the oven. Don’t forget to wipe down food processors, mixers, toaster ovens and blenders, too, with the stan- dard solution of baking soda. eRefrigerators — For refrigerators as well as freezers, get into the habit of following this easy baking soda cleaning pattern: 1. Rid the refrigerator of all foods that are either spoiled or not likely to be eaten. Then temporari- ly remove the foods to be saved and place them on the counter out of the way so that the refrigerator is virtually empty. Mix up a baking soda solution of four tbsp. baking soda and one quart of water and sponge it on all areas inside and outside refrigerator and freezer. The bak- ing soda will leave everything clean and odor free. For stubborn stains such as dried, sticky food spills or rust, apply a paste of three parts baking soda and one part water, or sprinkle dry baking soda on to a damp sponge and rub it in. Baking soda crystals are strong enough to remove soil, but too soft to scratch or harm refrigerators or freezers. Rinse and buff dry. 2. Next, replace the box of bak- ing soda tucked away in the back of the refrigerator with a fresh box. Chances are it’s been there for longer than you think, and is probably not absorbing and neutralizing odors as effectively as it should be. When you place the new box cn the shelf, mark the date you put it in the refrigerator and its replace- ment date three months later. (Generally, baking soda is most ef- fective when it is changed every three months.) Do the same with the baking soda box in the freezer.
