26 - Sunday, July 12, 1987 - North Shore News Travel Cyprus tour a success JUST BEFORE Christmas | did something [ don’t ordi- narily do — praised a holiday that } hadn’t personally checked. As a result, many people contacted the company and participated in the first tour to Cyprus. Fortunately, the tour was a howling success — in fact, one gentleman even took the lime to send me a postcard from Cyprus to thank me for drawing it to his at- tention. IT printed the card and mentioned that more of these fours were planned but at tina time the dates and particulars were vague. travel wise by Barbara McCreadie CERRITOS Good news! Everything is now organized to take 12 separate tours to Cyprus during Septemb-r, Oc- tober and November. Brian and | will be on one of them, although just which one is uncertain. ] particularly like the options available to travellers. You may either fly (Air Canada) to London and transfer immediately to Cyprus Air, flying non-stop to Cyprus, or you may take a break in London. One group stops overnight there both ways while the other group stops for three days in London on the way down and returns directly. Optional tours of London are or- ganized for a small extra charge. If you have never visited London you might be wise to consider the three-day stay and buy the tour packages — two half-day tours are $50 per person. Personally, I'm toying with the idea of the three-day stay for two reasons, First, after a tong fight I'd appreciate a breather. Second, it's a great opportunity to visit with some friends who have prom- ised to join us for a brief visit. And, Lalmost forgot — do a bit of shopping! After the tours arrive in Cyprus, the travellers have even more op- tions. Cyprus is very close to both Israel and Egypt and overnight cruises {0 both places can be pur- chased at a reasonable price. The visit to Egypt even includes a cruise on the Nile and a choice to visit the sound and light show at the pyramids. {f you should decide to go to that, there are two things you must remember to take along. The pyramids are in the desert and des- erts get very cold at night — bring a warm jacket. There were some sort of biting flies when } was there and J'd have given a lot for a bottle of bug repellent. Otherwise, the show is memora- ble. When we go. my choice would be to spend the entire time simply enjoying Cyprus, but since Brian hasn't seen either Egypt or Isract J don't want him to miss the oppor- tunity. Now, still another choice. There are two types of accommodation offered — both first class. For those, like me, who like condos, “hotel apartments’ with kitchens are available. For those who travel specifically to get out of the kitch- en the choice is clear — the first class hotel! Same price. Loam tokt that the food in Cyprus is remarkably good — the British didn't manage to ruin it. The water is perfectly safe and the entire island is unique for the Middle East — it’s clean. Since |} haven't yer visited Cyprus | can’t tell you what the bargains are in the shopping department. My guess is that there is an excellent array of fine hand- work as every collection of pictures I've seen includes photos of black-garbed elderly ladies em- broidering. The rates are some of the most reasonable I’ve seen — depending on dates and options, they start at $1,495, per person, double oc- cupancy. Fabulous ‘Thailand es Mate yan Thailand is booming!
