The Unit provides essential blood component support for patients throughout B.C. with disorders like leukemia. It is the only unit of its kind in the province, and hearing that another cell separator machine is urgently required for the Unit to help all those who need its support, the girls decided to raise funds to go towards the purchase of a new machine, as a service project. Pathfinders are the newest members of the Guiding family; girls aged 12 to 15 who meet in small groups to have fun together, to learn the skills needed to make them resourceful, helpful citizens and to give service in the community. The girls from the 6th West Vancouver Pathfinders were fascinated with the strange machines, and came away determined t6 interest others in supporting the Cell Separator Unit, through donations of ‘money and blood. Although the Unit services the entire province;* it depends on blaod donors from the Vancouver area, and many more donors are needed to ensure adequate “matching” with the patients using the machines. Coping with teachers, teenagers Has it ever happened or could it ever happen that * You would like to know more about what is really going on at school, but your child evades the questions you ask, and you don’t know who else or how else to ask? * You work during the day, and in the cvenings you are just too tired to attend a parent-teacher function? “After all,” you think, “these events are nice social affairs, bul you're never encouraged to say what you really feel and think, are you?” * You hear from neighbours ard school children that there are real problems and concerns at school, but the reports you reccive from the = ad- ministration suggest “everything is smoothly.” Faced with these thoughts and feelings parents may want to throw up their hands in frustration at the state of parent-teacher-student rela- uons. In fact, this approach was one reluctantly echoed during a recent meeting of concerned parents at the Seycove Community School. And it is a reaction that is perfectly understandable given the pressures of being a parent and of being a teacher today. Is this the only reaction available to parents today? going Not if you listen to Seycove principal Lorne Schemmer and Parent Liaison Co-ordinator Fran Matkin.
