abortion committee that
approves some 700 abortions
annually.

That number doesn't
reflect the number of women
who may have discussed
having an abortion with a
doctor but decided against
approaching the abortion
committee, said O'Dell.

LGH- doesn't permit
‘abortion on demand’,
O’Dell insists. He says the
Criminal Code clearly lays
out the procedure for
women seeking abortions. A
doctor must first be con-
sulted over whether or not to
approach the committee.

When an abortion ap
plication is made, the
committee must review it,
keeping in mind the health
and well-being of the
pregnant woman, he says.

“That is the legislation of
the land”

But the actual decision 1s
made personally in con-
sultation with the doctor,
says O'Dell, not by the
abortion committee.
