request to North Van

District for $34,255 to help
set up a liquor lounge in the
Recreation Centre was
denied Monday in a close 4-3
vote.

North Van _ Recreation
Commission Chairman
Alderman Jim Ball made the
appeal for funding saying
that many groups using the
rec centre for recreation
purposes wanted such a
lounge where they could get
together for a social hour.

Ball said he had done
considerable research on
community facilities in other
areas and found they were
profitable. He reported that
in a six month period Port
Moody had shown a profit of
$26,000.

“I estimate that within two
years our expenses will be
recovered,” said Ball.

Alderman Mary Segal,
another member of the rec
commission, told council she
had received several calls
expressing concern that the
Distnct was going into the
hquor business.

She described the facility
as “family oriented with 40
per cent of the revenue
derived from the sale of
food.”

where liquor was served but
could use the adjacent food
area, an arrangement she
said had proven successful in
other community facilities.
