Even his first public art exhibit at the age of 81 and the Order of B.C. he received this past June were unplanned success stories. That is the amazing thing about this true-life storyteller; his tales seem always to be of success. It's a good thing his father saved every letter his son wrote home because it allowed Spilsbury to re- count all these adventures in print. With three books already under his belt (Spilsbury’s Coast, The Ac- cidental Airline and Spilsbury‘s Album) he is now in the midst of completing his fourth — Spilsbury’s Coast of Many Colours. But naturally, it's not something he ever planned to do. It was at the coaxing of Harbour Publishing’s Howard White that Spilsbury’s Coast came into being. With all the interruptions (and the Order of B.C., he notes, was a major one), he’s been creeping along at a snail’s pace. But : Spilsbury hopes to have it in the bag before Christmas. _ ; ‘mm supposed to be sitting at that desk right now," he says with a guilty laugh. These days Spilsbury is content to write and paint — two things he’s done all of his fife. For years his work, inventions and energy were devoted to bringing the independent, isolated communities of the little coves and sounds together. Today, after years of migration to inland cities, most of those dots on the map he had worked to connect have simply disappeared. ; This past May Spilsbury made a three-week trip up the coast in his 1947 50-foot wooden-hulled vessel, Blithe Spirit, and he says this tour was his last. © “The world | knew has chang- ed completely,” he states simply...‘‘1 must say that I’m glad ! lived in the century | did."”
